Located in the north of the region, Burgos was founded in 844 as a fortress to protect the frontier against the kingdom of Navarre. Around it were various villages (burgos), which grew together to constitute a new town and gave it its name. It gained importance thanks to the fact that it helped to link the cities of the interior to the ports to the north, as well as being a stop on the road travelled by pilgrims from France on the way to Santiago. The city is also known for its Gothic architecture, in the churches of Santa Gadea, San Esteban and San Gil, and in the Hospital del Rey, Solar del Cid, and Carmelite and Augustinian convents. But it is the majestic cathedral, classed as UNESCO World Heritage that is the main exemplar of this architectural style.

Today our private driver will meet you at your hotel in Madrid and take you to Burgos. Part of the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), this city was originally a fortress town which protected the border between the kingdoms of Castilla y León and Navarra. Burgos actually means various “small villages” - these tiny hamlets merged together and formed this impressive city. The fabulous Gothic cathedral, in the center of the city, is a UNESCO Heritage Site and is sure to attract anyone’s attention with its 84-meter-high twin towers. Burgos is also the birthplace of El Cid, the hero who played a crucial role in the re-conquest of Valencia. There is a statue of him by the river, near the famous Puente de San Pablo. Go up to the castle, the Castillo de Burgos, the highest point of the city. From the ruins of the castle, you will get the most wonderful views over the city. After getting to know Burgos, our private driver will take you to Laguardia, a small medieval fortified town, located atop a rocky hill.

Although not a capital nor one of Spain’s largest cities, Bilbao has increasingly been making its mark with its striking transformation from trading hub and industrial city to world-famous cultural centre, thanks above all to the construction of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The city itself was founded in the early 14th century by families from the local nobility and reached its over-exploited peak in the early 20th century, when it was known affectionately by locals as Boxto (hole). The aesthethic revival of recent years has given what was already a very distinctive city a certain balance between the industrial past, the present as represented by certain local buildings, and the new cultural dynamic exemplified in impromptu art galleries and revamped neighbourhoods.

From La Rioja, our private driver will take you to Bilbao, a world-famous cultural center. Even if you are not that much of an art-lover, it is well worth visiting the main attraction of Bilbao - the Guggenheim Museum. Made out of titanium and built by Frank Gehry at the end of the 1990s, this museum stands on the riverbank and is a famous, important landmark of modern architecture. You will be able to enjoy a private tour in a museum that expresses the history and the essence of Bilbao. After visiting the museum, if you have the time, explore Bilbao a little more. From high up at the Basilica de Begoña, a Gothic building with an impressive Renaissance facade, you can look down at the Casco Viejo and the famous seven parallel streets. Afterwards, head to San Sebastián and prepare yourself for the next wonderful experience. This city is known for its excellent gastronomy, and already has several restaurants that have been awarded Michelin stars. To “tapear” (to snack on tapas) is the best way to taste all the different local specialties. For this reason, we have prepared a surprise for you: a private walking tour to try the regional and delicious pintxos!

The capital of the community of Navarre – and in the past, of the kingdom with the same name – this is a city that despite its proximity to France reflects a great deal of pride in Spanish traditions. Founded by Roman general Pompey – hence its name (in Basque it is called Iruña) – the city has undergone a number of major changes over the centuries, under the rule of Visigoths and Moors, and then as capital of the kingdom and a fortified city on the frontiers of a country. The old city centre of Pamplona, with its narrow streets, cobbled squares and neoclassical buildings, is small and easily explored on foot. Another curious fact about the city is that it has a large proportion of green space – about 20% of the urban area is made up of parks and squares.

Driving along the road through the suburbs and into Olite is a bit like zooming backwards in time. You go quickly from modern homes to Roman walls and stone-built houses, all in a uniform honey colour. In the distance, the silhouette of the grand castle towers over the town, which was favoured by royalty in the Middle Ages, especially by Carlos 3rd who, in the 15th century, governed the realm from here. Having withstood the passage of time, Olite is today is one of the best places in Navarre for Gothic architecture and among the best in Europe, making it worth your while to walk through its narrow streets to see the stone houses, medieval arcades and fine churches. Nevertheless, Olite is no museum city and has increasingly been making its mark as a producer of excellent red and rosé wine.

Today, our private driver will take you from San Sebastián to Pamplona, the capital of Navarra founded by Roman general Pompey and located between the Ebro River and the Pyrenees. Discover the small historic center, lined with medieval city walls, by wandering through its narrow streets, cobbled squares and colored houses. Marvel at the neoclassical buildings and enjoy the green spaces, as Pamplona is made up of many leafy parks. Visit the Cathedral, the Church of San Saturnino – another stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago – the Church of San Lorenzo and the Plaza de Toros (bullring). Brimming with culture and history, Pamplona, a city Ernest Hemingway held so dear, has a lot of architectural gems to admire. Afterwards, our private driver will take you to Olite, characterized by its Roman walls, medieval arcades, narrow streets and honey-colored stone houses. Explore this charming medieval gem and admire the grand castle that towers over the town. It really seems like Olite stopped in time! Explore the Gothic architecture and the fine churches.

Sigüenza is a historical city, built after the Muslim invasion in the 8th century, and which is crossed by the Henares River. It has a vast, rich medieval architectural heritage, starting at Plaza Mayor, surrounded by 16th century buildings, and going up to the castle. This, after being used by the Romans, the Moors, the royal family and for military purposes, is now a beautiful Parador. The majestic cathedral, in the heart of the historical centre of the town, is Romanesque but has a number of Gothic and Renaissance elements. It houses a significant art collection inside.

Take the day to further explore Madrid. Start at the Plaza de Colón, the square named after Christopher Columbus. Here you will see a huge monument of the explorer and the largest flag in Spain. From there, move on to the Puerta de Alcalá, an enormous monument with three arches, which, until the end of the 19th century, was the entry point to Madrid for those arriving from Alcalá de Henares in the East. To get to the center of the city, pass through the Plaza Cibeles, where you will find the famous fountain and the grandiose Palacio de Comunicaciones, from where you will get a wonderful panoramic view. Take the remaining time to explore, for example, the other famous museums in Madrid’s Golden Art Triangle – apart from the Prado Museum, you can also visit the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. At the end of the day, you can relax in the bucolic Parque de Buen Retiro.
