With the white peaks of the Sierra Nevada within sight of the city, Granada is nevertheless relatively close to the coast, which means you can walk or ski in the mountains and swim in the sea on the same trip. As the last Muslim-ruled city in what is now Spain to fall to Christian forces, Granada unsurprisingly retains many traces of its five centuries of Moorish culture. Cordoba is a city full of idyllic settings that make it ideal for exploring on foot. Its unique architecture and splendid buildings transport the visitor back to a time that is hard to identify precisely, given the presence here of marked influences from three different peoples. Nevertheless, it was as capital of the emirate of Cordova, in the Islamic period, that the city flowered and enjoyed its golden age. Although ruled by the Moors, Cordova was also home to Visigoths and Jews. The latter had their own quarter and synagogue. As well as the imposing palaces and luxurious royal residence of Medina Azahara, Islamic rule saw the construction of some 3,000 mosques, 300 sophisticated public baths and one of the world’s biggest libraries, that have since been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage.

Pick up the rental car at the nearest desk to your hotel and drive to Jaén. It is easy to see why this city is known as the olive oil capital, given the huge numbers of trees and vast expanse of olive groves which surround the city. Visit the enormous Renaissance cathedral and the 11th century Arab baths. It is also worth going to the Cerro de Santa Catalina to get a truly magnificent view. After falling in love with Jaén, drive on to Córdoba. When you arrive, you might want to walk along the banks of the Guadalquivir River to admire the imponent Roman bridge. Explore the Jewish Quarter with its labyrinthine, picturesque streets, the out-of-the-way corners, whitewashed houses, lovely squares, flower-filled patios, lively bars and imposing monuments. It is easy to see why the monumental historic center has been declared a World Heritage Site! Be sure to stop by the picturesque, narrow Calleja de las Flores, one of the most popular streets in Córdoba.

From here, you can also look out over the Tróia peninsula. Discover the heavenly beaches, and the Mosteiro dos Capuchinhos, hidden amongst the foliage. Formerly called Lacobriga by the Romans, Lagos is located on a slope that descends gently to the mouth of the River Bensafrim. It was ruled by the Moors from the 8th century until the town was conquered by the Christians in 1250. In 1505, Dom Manuel I granted Lagos the “foral” (charter) giving it municipal autonomy. This important document is nowadays displayed in the local museum. Lagos was a very important port during the time of the Portuguese maritime expansion. It was from this port that Dom Sebastião left for the ill-fated battle of Alcacer Kibir, which would result in the loss of Portuguese independence for a period of 60 years. Spain’s fourth largest city and Andalusia’s most important port. Legend has it that it was founded by Hercules, but history states that it was Christopher Columbus who took it to to the heights, by discovering America. Seville today has many monuments and a vast heritage, and is known for its soul and has a lively, joyous city that inspires sensations and passions. Seville has witnessed the passage of various peoples, with a Cathedral that is the world’s largest Gothic edifice, a symbol of Christianity; La Giralda – originally the minaret of a mosque – and the Reales Alcázares de Sevilla, both built under the Moors; and the Archivo General de Indias, where historical records on the Americas are kept.
