This region includes the coastal area bordered by the Adriatic Sea between Le Marche and Puglia, and the inland area up to the border with Lazio. Abruzzo and Molise are two areas separated by the Apennines, but they form a single region, which is a kind of transitional area between the north and south of Italy. This sparsely populated area is a mountainous enigma, and covers a large area of protected land, such as the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, which is rich in flora and wildlife. This region is full of natural attractions and dotted with picturesque, unspoilt towns and farms. Amidst the hills and green plains, you can see the shepherds with their sheep and goats, and many species of birds – in many areas, humans are the least sighted animal. Many cities and towns in this region maintain their folk traditions that date back to the Italian tribes that founded them. If you are looking to get away from the bustle of the city and simply relax and enjoy nature, make the most of the silent valleys in this region. In mid-season, the area is ideal for hiking and exploring what the land has to offer, while in winter, Abruzzo is the favourite destination for those who are keen on winter sports. Besides the natural attractions, there are also castles, museums and churches for you to admire, which engage you in the region’s culture and history. The climate is more Continental in the inland areas and more Mediterranean on the coast. Winter is harsh and cold, and summer, hot and dry. As it is a mountainous region, farming is difficult and lamb rearing predominates, which is why this animal is frequently used for the typical local dishes.
