Sicily
The island of Sicily is lapped by the waters of the Mediterranean, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, and it is easy to get to from the tip of southern Italy’s “boot”. With seascapes, volcanoes and mountains, the scenery in Sicily is both diverse and stunning. If you are a fan of the outdoor life, Sicily will be your little piece of paradise. You can wind your way along cliff-edge coastal roads, climb active volcanoes, meander through colourful meadows or go diving in the purest Mediterranean waters on world-renowned beaches. Poets such as Homer and Virgil praised this region highly for its natural beauty and its cultural and artistic treasures. Sicily’s scenic attractiveness is not limited to its beaches; the island is replete with architectural rarities. In the capital, Palermo, you will see Arab domes and arches and Byzantine mosaics, while in the south-eastern part of the island you can admire the finest works of Baroque architecture. In the wake of twenty-five centuries of foreign rule, Sicily’s cultural legacy is both vast and varied, ranging from the Magna Graecia architecture in Syracuse to the splendor of its Norman cathedrals and palaces. To be able to appreciate this island in all its glory you need to have an open mind. Today, Sicily is still battling against Mafia-influenced corruption and suffers from insufficient infrastructures in some areas. Conversely, it reigns supreme where gastronomy is concerned. With a combined miscellany of culinary influences, the island maintains its timeless recipes. The essential ingredients, such as seafood, almonds, sardines, tuna and citrus fruit are wonderfully suited to the typical dishes. In Palermo, the Castellammare del Golfo sparkling wine makes an excellent meal companion and in Catania, a smoking Mount Etna on the horizon serves as backdrop. From Sicily, a pleasant boat trip will bring you to the heavenly Aeolian Islands or the lush green island of Ustica.
