Travel GuideTurin, Piedmont & Aosta Valley
Turin, Piedmont & Aosta Valley
The best way of identifying where Piedmont is located is through the name itself, which means “at the foot of the mountain”. Piedmont is almost surrounded by the Alps, with the Aosta Valley watching it from the top of the highest mountain in Italy. This region isn’t just about the ski slopes and lovely, white landscapes, however. This is where the movement that led to the unification of Italy began, driven by the Savoy family. It was also here that another movement started, one more appealing to the taste buds, known as Slow Food. The culture has a strong French influence, as France is just across the other side of the mountains, and to begin with you might think you have crossed the border and left Italy. However, you will quickly realise, through the wines and the food and even the people, that the heart of Piedmont is really Italian. In fact, it was here that one of the most famous makes of car was created: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino, better known as Fiat. The region’s capital is Turin, an elegant city where you may well be invited to have a glass of muscatel or sample some delicious Italian chocolates. And if you are a football fan, you could see La Vecchia Signora playing, the name the locals give to the Juventus team. In contrast to Piedmont, the Aosta Valley is one of the smallest regions in Italy, but the highest as far as mountains are concerned. With four of the highest peaks in the Alps in its territory, Aosta Valley is where you can admire the landscapes of Monte Bianco and explore the natural beauty of the oldest National Park in the country. Set out on a walk along the numerous trails and get to know the animal species that inhabit this beautiful region.
